Little Spoon Review

Little Spoon

Little Spoon meal delivery is a service for babies, toddlers, and kids. More importantly, it’s for busy parents who don’t have time to prepare nutritious meals. This in-depth review will detail everything about the company and its food so you can order with confidence.

Little Spoon Logo

Little Spoon started as a baby food company, but they’ve grown a lot since then. They still offer baby food, but they also offer bite-sized food for baby-led weaning, smoothie pouches, and plates for toddlers and bigger kids. Their meals are designed to focus on nutrition and recipes that kids will enjoy.

Let me start by saying this; I’ve tried my fair share of meal delivery services, but this was the first I got just for my child, not the whole family. I don’t have a baby, but I do have a semi-picky four-year-old who is not fond of trying new things. For reference, she doesn’t have any allergies or dietary restrictions. Our family is not vegetarian either, so she was able to try a little bit of everything.

From the time the box arrived at my front door to her trying the last meal, I was very happy with our Little Spoon experience. The plates and outer packaging with nutrition/cooking info are vibrant colors, which immediately made my child excited to try them! Let’s break it down one category at a time so you can determine if Little Spoon would be a good fit for your child.

Our Overall Rating

4.60

Little Spoon is a meal delivery service that was designed with babies, toddlers, and kids in mind. This is one of the few meal delivery services that caters exclusively to kids, and as a mom, I had to give it a try. Let’s be honest; the idea of nutritious meals delivered fresh weekly with recipes that appeal to picky eaters almost sounds too good to be true!

After lots of taste testing, researching, and note-taking, I’m excited to share an in-depth review of Little Spoon’s meal delivery service for other curious parents to read before placing an order.

The quality of Little Spoon meals is a great value for your money. Not only are the meals delicious, but they offer balanced nutrition with recipes a toddler will actually eat. All meals are designed with the help of a registered dietitian using clean, good-for-you ingredients. They leave out processed sugars and high amounts of added sodium that you’ll find in other premade meals, which made me feel good about feeding them to my child.

While Little Spoon BabyBlends are made using certified organic ingredients, Biteables, and Plates are not. The ingredients are non-GMO, though. Organic ingredients are used as often as possible for these toddler and big kid meals but not 100% of the time. Meals are well-rounded with ingredients that offer the vitamins, minerals, protein, and healthy fats a growing child needs.

Biteables, Plates, and Smoothies all have high-quality recipes that are unique compared to other premade meals for kids. It’s clear that the food is prepared, packaged, and shipped in a timely fashion because it all arrives looking and tasting fresh. The flavors, portions, and ingredients in Little Spoon products are all fantastic.

Some of the fan-favorite menu items we haven’t tried yet are the chicken pot stickers, chicken super nuggets, sweet potato carrot poppers, and the purple carrot acai bowl. Even after completing this Little Spoon review, the meals on the menu have me excited to order more for my child to try!

Overall, the taste of Little Spoon meals was a big hit with my four-year-old! The smoothies were by far her favorite item, which was surprising because she’s never been a fan of pouches. All the smoothies are sweet, not savory, but there’s a food range of flavors from one pouch to the next, so she wasn’t bored.

The smoothies are an easy addition to a packed lunch for daycare or school. They can be enjoyed alone for a snack or as a side with a meal, which I love. The cookies and cream smoothie with oat milk and chickpeas were her favorite, and the strawberry banana shake with coconut milk was a close second. I’ve already placed an order for more smoothies because it’s so rare to find a healthy snack she’s excited to eat!

The Biteables were good, but you can definitely tell they’re designed with younger toddlers in mind. The flavors were very mild, but not in a bad way. My daughter can be picky at times, so mild flavors are easier to get her to try. The shredded fajita chicken with black beans and corn was one of her favorite meals that I’ll definitely be reordering. She was also a big fan of the mini white mac & cheese with herb-tossed carrots and peas.

Plates have bigger flavors for bigger kids, but the taste still passed the picky-eater test in my house! Little Spoon does a fantastic job of incorporating hidden veggies in their recipes, so my daughter ate some foods I know I’d never be able to get her to eat otherwise.

Little Spoon meals

The mac & three cheese with invisible butternut squash and carrots is a vegetarian plate that was a clear favorite. I tried a bite of this after heating it up, and it’s so good I’d order an adult serving if I could! The purple carrot blueberry oat balls and baked apples were the first meal she wanted to try when we unpacked the delivery, and she ate them so fast that I didn’t have time to snap a picture. If that’s not a good sign, I don’t know what is!

The pizza pocket with cauliflower and Romanesco broccoli was a plate she wasn’t as crazy about. I don’t think she disliked the flavor, but the texture. I microwaved this plate just like the others, but the pizza pocket turned out quite soggy. There are oven directions on the package too, and I think the oven is the best cooking method for certain meals that you want to have a crispy finish.

For me, cooking a premade meal in the oven takes away some of the convenience factors, so this is an area that Little Spoon could improve on for sure. The best way to go about it may be by marking certain meals as oven meals or clearly highlighting that the oven is the preferred cooking method for a certain meal on the package.

Plates require less than 10 minutes in the oven once it’s preheated, but again, that’s not nearly as convenient as 90 seconds in the microwave. Also, you have to move the food from the plate to an oven-safe dish before heating.

Portion Sizes

Little Spoon Meals

Portion sizes were one of my biggest questions going into this review. A portion size that’s too large would create food waste, while a portion size that’s too small would leave a child asking for more. Thankfully, Little Spoon has absolutely mastered serving sizes for toddlers and young kids.

The Biteables were just enough food for my daughter, who finished 99% of the food on the plates. Portions are larger on the Plates, which makes sense since they’re marketed toward older kids. My 4-year-old finished about ¾ of the servings on most Plates, which I was happy with! There was minimal food waste, but still extra food, so the servings will be able to keep her full as she gets older too.

There were a couple of Plates she had only finished half of, and I put the rest into a storage container to keep in the fridge. Those leftovers heated up just as well as the plate did the first time around and made the perfect afternoon snack. The pasta Plates seemed to be the ones she didn’t eat as much because she got full quicker.

While I can’t attest to the serving sizes of BabyBlends, I will say they seem to be a similar size to the premade baby food you buy at the grocery store. Unopened BabyBlends are good for up to 14 days in the fridge and should be consumed within 48 hours of opening, leaving plenty of time to feed your baby multiple smaller servings if they can’t finish the blend in one sitting.

Little Spoon Reviews

I scoured the internet looking for good reviews, bad reviews, and everything in between. One thing I quickly noticed is that negative reviews are almost impossible to find because the vast majority of customers love the products and service! The most consistent complaint I found was parents asking for more variety in meals. This could be achieved if they did weekly menu updates rather than monthly, but honestly, it isn’t an issue for most parents or kids.

Little Spoon is very responsive to customer reviews too. If someone has a not-so-great experience, their customer service team reaches out quickly to try and make things right, which is always good to see.

Packaging & Recycling

Little Spoon packaging

I was very impressed with the Little Spoon packaging! Everything arrived neatly packed in one box. The box has a layer of insulation to keep things chilled. Multiple ice packs were placed under, around, and on top of the meals, so everything was kept cold until I got home to move it to the refrigerator.

Our family is big on recycling and lowering our carbon footprint, so 100% recyclable packing is one of my favorite things about Little Spoon. The box and insulation can go straight to curbside recycling. Plates and the plastic covering on top can be recycled after being rinsed, or you can keep the plates to reuse. Personally, I kept a few Plates and a few Biteables trays, then recycled the rest.

The ice packs have a biodegradable filling. To recycle the pack, let it thaw fully, then snip one corner and empty the filling into your trash can. Rinse the ice pack, and it’s ready for curbside recycling. I also want to point out that the ice packs are very high-quality and feature cute designs! I recycled most of them, but I did keep a couple to put in my freezer to reuse when we need to pack a cooler with lunch for a day at the zoo or pool.

The unique liner is made from denim! That’s right – recycled jeans, which you can send back free of charge for a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th life. Read more here.

Bottom Line

All in all, I would be thrilled to feed my child Little Spoon items again, and I’ve already recommended it to some of my mom friends. I went into this Little Spoon review with a lot of concerns about my child enjoying the food or even wanting to try it, but those concerns were quickly put to rest.

If you don’t mind paying a little more to give your child nutritious meals that you don’t have to prepare, Little Spoon is a great choice.

What we liked:

  • Multiple stages of food for different ages
  • Unique recipes that still feel familiar, like chicken super nuggets and mac n cheese with hidden veggies.
  • Incredible customer service
  • 100% recyclable packaging and plates
  • Flexible subscription plan with no commitment

What we didn’t like:

  • The menu could use more variety or more frequent updates
  • Some items get soggy in the microwave and would cook better in the oven
  • The items are a little pricey, so it’s not something every family can afford, even though the overall value is good.
